When we think about leaks, we think about that annoying pit…pat….coming from the sink at three in the morning. We can usually tell when a faucet leaks when the water drips out of it, probably at an inconvenient time, like when you’re trying to sleep. However, there are other moments where leaks occur that may not be obvious. It is important to regularly check for leaks in your plumbing to prevent future damages and to lower your water bill. Water Pressure
Open your faucets and check if there is a normal amount of water coming out. If not, it can mean that there is a leak somewhere in the pipelines. If there is a leak, the same amount of water does not reach the faucet, thus causing the water pressure to lessen.
Toilet
Outside of faucets, toilets are the second leading site for water leaks. In order to check if there is unnecessary water usage, open the top to the tank. Listen closely to see if you hear a hissing sound. (Check before actually using the toilet.) The running water sound can mean more water is going out than is appropriate. Another way to check is by putting food coloring in the water tank. Wait for a little while without using the toilet and then check the water in the bowl. If there is color in it, it means your toilet has a leak.
Water Meter
Another way to check for leaks is to check your water meter. This can help you find any leaks that are not visible or apparent. In order to find mystery leaks, check your water meter and note the number. Wait an hour or so without using any water sources in the house. Come back and check the meter again. If you the number has changed, it can mean there is a leak in your home.
