No one wants to deal with a clogged sink, but like most things in life this problem may be unavoidable. While you may think to grab your handy dandy snake to unclog your drain, most sinks use a basin trap that will likely need to be dismantled for proper cleaning. Before you start breaking down your sink, make sure you have all of the supplies you need:
- Bucket
- Bowl
- Toothbrush
- Washers
Luckily, sink traps are designed to help facilitate a quick and easy clean. You won’t even need to break out your toolkits, which can be a positive or a negative depending on how much you enjoy using a screwdriver.
The Cleaning Process
- Before you start touching anything, place your bucket underneath your sink to catch any water or debris that pours out.
- Loosen both the top and waste pipe check nut to remove the trap, and pour any water in it into your bucket.
- Unscrew the two halves of your sink trap.
- Now it’s time to clean – use the toothbrush to scrub away any gunk that’s built up on the inside of the trap over time, and make sure all the debris has been cleared out before putting it back together.
Now that you’ve reassembled your sink trap, run your sink to make sure that nothing’s leaking. You may want to keep the bucket positioned underneath the trap just to make sure that you don’t need to clean up any messy surprises.
